Southwood High School
Northfield High School
The Knights ventured to the Peru Thrush Tennis Complex for the first round of IHSAA Tennis Sectional 50. The Knight Netters defeated Northfield 3-2 to advance to Thursday’s Semifinals against the host Peru Bengal Tigers. The strong wind played havoc with all the matches, but the girls were able to mentally overcome the distracting wind.
Southwood’s #1 doubles pair of Brooke Wyatt/Emily Gwillim cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory to get the night started. Kim Hobson followd soon thereafter at #2 singles with an efficient 6-1, 6-1 win. Lorynn Hunt dropped her match at #3 singles 1-6, 2-6 to make the score Southwood 2 Northfield 1. Meanwhile, Hannah King/Mary Sieberns took set one 6-4 at #2 doubles while Northfield’s Jordan Bratch took set one from Drue Gentry at #1 singles in a tiebreaker.
Northfield’s #2 doubles tandem fought back to win set two and force a third set while Drue Gengry was fighting back from 2-5 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. As that match played out, Southwood’s #2 doubles pair raced out to a 4-1 lead in the third set. Back at #1 singles, Jordan Bratch prevailed in another tiebreaker, 8-6, to tie the team match at 2-2. Moments later Southwood’s #2 doubles team secured the team win with a 6-1 third set victory.
The Knights move to 6-14 on the year..
