EVERY STUDENT ATHLETE THAT GETS RECRUITED WILL BE GOOGLED
As a student-athlete, when you enter and are added to a collegiate recruiting pool or prospective list, YOU will have a Google search conducted on you by a college coach. Facebook, Twitter, texts, emails, Snap-chats, Instagram postings – college coaches will search them and find you or the “ONLINE” YOU. This is a representation of YOU, YOUR FAMILY, YOUR SCHOOL. Inappropriate materials will be looked upon by a potential college coach and COULD AFFECT whether you receive an offer or not.
Social networking IS a major issue. Student-athletes routinely put themselves in high profile situations. The common mistakes – “this won’t get me in trouble” – my friends won’t do anything with this – no one will see this
Parents must be proactive and make your children understand that :
a. YOU are representing yourself – in what light do you want to portray yourself
b. UNDERSTAND the negative impact of posting statements, pictures, etc.
c. REMEMBER that participating in athletics is NOT your constitutional right – it is a PRIVILEGE
